Abstract

This work analyzes the song Maria da Vila Matilde, by Douglas Germano, performed by Elza Soares, from a feminist perspective. The song denounces violence against women in the domestic environment, which is what singer Elza Soares also experienced, described at different times in her career. Under a feminist analysis of the biography of Elza Soares and the song Maria da Vila Matilde, it is possible to understand the nuances of the dominant sex-gender system in our society reflected through violence against women.

Author Biography

  • Dra. Angelita P. de Lima, Universidade Federal de Goiás, Federal University of Goiás

    Current Rector of UFG (2022-2025). Associate Professor at UFG, Faculty of Information and Communication, and member of the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program in Human Rights (PPGIDH). Graduated in Social Communication - Journalism, Master's in Brazilian Education, and PhD in Geography. Her research focuses on gender issues related to women, their interactions in society, politics, the media, and the State, with an emphasis on violence against women. In the field of communication, she researches literary journalism and so-called non-fiction narratives, aimed at producing life stories. She is a member of the Interdisciplinary Research, Teaching and Extension Center in Human Rights - NDH/UFG and also the research groups: a) Space, Subject and Existence Dona Alzira - IESA/UFG; and b) Geography, Literature and Art Group (Geoliterart), linked to the Department of Geography at the University of São Paulo USP. She coordinates the research project "Eye on the Polls: Women's Candidacies and Monitoring of Gender Equality in the 2024 Elections," in partnership with the National Observatory of Women in Politics of the Federal Chamber.
