Abstract

This paper analyzes the representation of the periphery in London’s East End in the early 20th century in Jack London’s The People of the Abyss (2020). Using literature and photography as forms of symbolic construction and instruments of power, the study investigates the contribution of London’s testimonial and visual narrative to the formation of the imaginary about urban marginality. The research demonstrates that, although guided by a critical intention, the author’s work reproduces discourses marked by stigmatization and contradiction. However, its ambiguity reveals the structural flaws of a system that perpetuates misery and inequality. Thus, a critical reflection is proposed on the historical inscription of urban heritage often marginalized in these media.
