Abstract

This article examines socialism as a tool for national liberation in the Global South during the Cold War, analyzing its contributions, contradictions, and contemporary legacies. Focusing on paradigmatic cases (Cuba, Vietnam, Angola, and Mozambique), it demonstrates how socialist projects broke with imperialism but faced challenges such as external dependence and bureaucratization. Using a Marxist framework, the study reveals that socialism provided concrete alternatives for sovereignty and social development, outperforming capitalist peripheral nations in key indicators. However, the analysis critiques structural limitations, including the reproduction of geopolitical asymmetries and reliance on extractive models. The conclusion argues that despite these challenges, socialism remains relevant as a strategic horizon against neocolonialism, requiring adaptations to 21st-century conditions like climate justice and deglobalization.
