Abstract

Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) therapy is safe and effective for preventing, reversing atelectasis and removing pulmonary secretions. The experimental study aimed to develop a device capable of generating PEP and assessing mechanical performance. With 14 components and produced in aluminum and plastic it presented characteristics of a non-gravitational flow-dependent resistor. The pressures, obtained through the Certifier® FA TSI high flow flowmeter model (TSI Corporated, USA), had influence of the orifice resistance with diameters of 1.5; 2.0; 3.0; 4.0 and 5.0mm, weights of five pistons (1.5; 1.6; 2.0; 3.2 and 3.8g) and constant flows of 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 12L / min or piston firing flow. The piston of 3.2g (4) pointed out to be the statistically significant reference when reaching a pressure of 20cmH2O with flows of 8.16L / min, for the 1.5mm diameter orifice.
