Abstract

The present study had as objective to investigate essential oils with effect on species of Malassezia spp. An integrative bibliographic research was carried out, in which the scientific articles were retrieved from the databases BVS, SciELO, Pubmed, Science direct, LILACS and CAPES, published between the years of 1997-2017. Among the evaluated essential oils, it was observed in a preclinical study that Cymbopogon citratus showed activity against Malassezia spp., while in in vitro studies anti-Malassezia activity of essential oils from Peumus boldus, Caryophyllus aromaticus, Citrus limon, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Citrus aurantifolia, Coleus amboinicus and Eucalyptus globulus. The results concerning the evaluation of the toxicity of the essential oils show that C. citratus, C. limon and Origanum vulgare in low concentrations, presented low toxicity. In all essential oils studied, inhibitory activity was observed against Malassezia species, and could act as possible sources for new drugs with antifungal activity.
